Choosing the Right Assessment for the Right Purpose
Eliasson, Ann-Christin
Physical & Occupational Therapy in Pediatrics, v32 n1 p22-23 Feb 2012
Assessments used for both clinical practice and research should show evidence of validity and reliability for the target group of people. It is easy to agree with this statement, but it is not always easy to choose the right assessment for the right purpose. Recently there have been increasing numbers of studies which investigate further the psychometric properties of old assessments for the upper limbs, as well as newly developed assessments. At the same time, research into hand and upper limb function has increased dramatically. However, it is not always easy to make conclusions based on the different studies, since the construct of the assessment used is not always related to the aim of the study. From a test construction as well as clinical perspective, it is easy to agree that an assessment should be investigated for reliability. In this article, the author discusses how to choose the right assessment that actually measures what is intended to be treated or described.
