Minority Pre Co-op Program for High School Graduates.
Union Carbide Corp., Oak Ridge, TN. Nuclear Div.
In a program undertaken by Union Carbide to encourage black students to enter science and engineering studies, five black universities recruited high school graduates. The universities were: Howard Univ., North Carolina A and T State Univ., Southern Univ., Tennessee State Univ., and Tuskegee Institute. Union Carbide provided summer employment for the students prior to their first year of college as well as books and tuition the first year. After their freshman year, the students entered cooperative education programs of alternate work and study. Of the 78 students who entered the program during the three-year period, 59 are still in the program. Forty of these are in engineering and nineteen in science (ten women and 49 men). Another ten of the original 78 are still in college, but no longer in the program. (AG)
