Nevada Education in 1989/90: A Status Report.

This report provides selected statistics concerning Nevada's 17 school districts and is designed to be reviewed by citizens interested in the condition of their schools. The educational data contained in this report are for the school year ending June 1989. Financial, student (i.e., enrollment trends), achievement (i.e., trends on the Nevada High School Proficiency Examination and Stanford Achievement Tests), teacher (i.e., trends in average teacher salaries), and classroom data for the 1987 through 1989 school years are provided. The following school systems are featured: Carson City, Churchill County, Clark County, Douglas County, Elko County, Esmeralda County, Eureka County, Humboldt County, Lander County, Lincoln County, Lyon County, Mineral County, Nye County, Pershing County, Storey County, Washoe County, and White Pine County. The main data sources include the: "Nevada Statistical Abstract 1988" (1988), "Research Bulletin: Enrollment and Licensed Personnel Information (1988 and 1989), and seven offices of the Nevada State Department of Education. Data highlight some of the following trends: school enrollment continues to grow at a rapid rate (the average statewide enrollment has increased 3% in 3 consecutive years); funding for education increased by 22% in 3 years to a 1989 level of $722,591,788; the graduation rate stands at 72%; the 1989 dropout rate for Nevada high school students stands at 9.5%; Nevada's classrooms continue to be crowded (the number of students per classroom teacher in the elementary schools has increased in each of the last 4 years and now stands at 26.6 to 1; and Nevada's 3-year 4% increase in teacher salaries has placed it 21st among the states, a slight decline from the 1987 ranking of 19th.
