Am I Fat? Helping Young Children Accept Differences in Body Size.

This book offers information and ideas to support teachers, parents and other caregivers in their efforts to help children accept and like their bodies. It includes specific tips on dealing with body image issues and suggestions for role modeling healthy attitudes about body size. It also offers suggestions for healthy eating, increasing physical activity for both children and adults and creating a bias-free environment in the school. Chapter 1 focuses on body image and includes discussion on how body image develops, the selling of the perfect body, the self-esteem connection, and being sensitive to body image issues. Chapter 2 focuses on understanding that diversity is normal. It discusses differential growth rates; the role of heredity; and cultural influences. Chapter 3 focuses on nutrition and physical activity. It discusses trusting the body; explaining good nutrition; mealtime issues; and physical activity and body image. Chapter 4 focuses on body image in the school setting. It discusses creating a bias-free school environment; modeling a healthy body image; school food service; physical education; and the school nurse. Chapter 5 focuses on body image in the classroom. It presents classroom activities on accepting diversity, enhancing self-esteem, nutrition, and encouraging physical activity. Chapter 6 focuses on handling difficult situations. It presents three case studies and guidelines to follow when expressing concerns to others who work with the child.
