Compass and Prerequisite Course Scores as Predictors of Success in Practical Nursing School
Pritchard, Toni L. Early
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Walden University
The nursing shortage is compounded by nursing student attrition. Schools of nursing have limited enrollment, making the admission process an important factor in resolving the ongoing nursing shortage. The purpose of this study was to identify preadmission criteria that accurately identify applicants to practical/vocational nursing (P/VN) schools who will graduate. A review of related literature revealed that the registered nurse is the most frequent focus of nursing research. Gaps were identified in the literature regarding P/VN and predicting success at the time of nursing school admission. The predictive validity of admission screening criteria for the practical nursing (PN) program at a technical college in a southern state was evaluated. The target population included all students enrolled in the PN program from January 2006 through January 2009. This non-experimental, correlational study compared placement screening scores and/or prerequisite course scores of PN school completers to those of noncompleters to evaluate the predictive validity of each measure. Statistical analysis of data included the "t"-test for independent measures, the analysis of variance, and post hoc testing with a modified Bonferroni. Results demonstrated a significant relationship between placement screening reading scores and successful PN program completion. Findings from this research will improve admission screening practices and assist in the development of support programs to promote student success. Implications for positive social change resulting from this study include increasing the number of nursing school graduates, which will have a positive impact on the nursing shortage, resulting in improved healthcare outcomes for healthcare consumers across the nation, as well as improving the quality of life of the student and his/her family.
