Safe at School: Planning for Children with Special Needs: A Videotape Training Program and Viewer's Guide. [Videotape].
Colorado Univ. Health Sciences Center, Denver. School of Nursing.
This half-hour videotape and accompanying viewer's guide are designed to assist school personnel in the identification of real and potentially hazardous conditions which threaten the physical safety of children with special needs. The tape presents a systematic process for assessing risk factors and implementing intervention strategies. Policies and procedures that can be implemented by schools for the safety of all children are discussed. The viewer's guide is organized around a 3-step process: (1) assessing the child for his/her own unique safety risks; (2) assessing the school environment with these risk factors in mind; and (3) developing a safety action plan that is based on these two assessments. In each of these sections, specific needs of children with mobility impairments, sensorineural impairments, or cognitive/emotional impairments are addressed. The final section discusses general policies and procedures for school safety including a regular safety walk-through of the entire school, staffing levels, and emergencies. (DB)
