Teens Share Sexually Explicit Messages: Simple Rebellion or Dangerous Behavior?
Curriculum Review, v48 n9 p5 May 2009
An increasingly popular form of communication among teenagers is "sexting," sending nude photos via text messaging, reported The Orange County Register (3/20/09). This "flirtation" technique has sparked quite a bit of debate: is this simply a form of rebellion or is it dangerous behavior that could have adverse penalties? Although many teens say sexting is done just for fun, some believe it can lead to promiscuity or coercion to have sex. This destructive communication technique has resulted in some teens facing felony charges for their participation. In an effort to raise awareness about sexting and other cell phone safety issues, Web Wise Kids has created a computer program called, "It's Your Call" to educate teenagers. This new program is now available to educators nationwide for use in their schools. This paper provides some information educators can share with students to encourage them to steer clear of "sexting" and using other technology for sexually motivated activities.
