The Machine in the University: Sample Course Syllabi for the History of Technology and Technology Studies. Second Edition.
Reynolds, Terry S., Comp.; And Others
Provided are 23 course syllabi representing a broad range of courses taught in the fields of history of technology and technological studies. The collection falls into two major categories. The first section outlines courses dealing primarily with the history of technology, including courses dealing with the history of technology in a Western or world context, specifically an American context, and in various topical contexts. (Examples of these topics are flight, invention and innovation, and women in technology.) The second section is concerned with contemporary technological studies. It contains courses which introduce students to the area of science and technology studies, courses designed to provide "technological literacy" to liberal arts students, and courses focusing on specific topics in modern technology (such as gender, the environment, the impact of television, and nuclear proliferation). Each syllabus contains: (1) a statement of course goals; (2) subjects covered; (3) required and/or suggested readings; and (4) study and examination questions. The appendix includes a list of over 100 additional courses, each of which is briefly annotated. (TW)
