Scientific and Technical English.
Vaclavik, Jaroslav
Technical English differs from everyday English because of the specialized contexts in which it is used and because of the specialized interests of scientists and engineers. This text provides exercises in technical and scientific exposition in the following fields: mathematics, physics, temperature effects, mechanics, dynamics, conservation of energy, gases and liquids, heat, sound, optics, light energy, magnetism and electricity, chemistry, plastics engineering, atomic energy, radioactivity, nuclear reactors, strength of materials, machine elements, civil engineering, construction engineering, concrete structures, architecture, power and mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, electronics, electronic data processing, and agriculture and forestry. Each lesson contains the following sections: (1) a discussion of the topic and an explanation of technical terms in context; (2) reading comprehension questions and problems; (3) an English-German glossary of important terms; (4) a grammar section containing examples in English and German, and explanations in German; (5) word study and symbols; and (6) writing exercises including translation exercises. Appendices deal with vocabulary, symbols, abbreviations, differences between American and British English, and pronunciation. (AMH)
