Nonverbal Communication: Increasing Awareness in the General Music Classroom
Battersby, Sharyn L.
General Music Today, v22 n3 p14-18 2009
Busy music teachers try to strike a balance between everything that they want to accomplish in a lesson and the constraints of their own teaching circumstances. What is sometimes overlooked in their efforts to fulfill their expectations is how their students really see them and what they are communicating to them with their bodies. Nonverbal exchanges such as hand gestures or facial expressions between a teacher and students can impact learning experiences in music classrooms or rehearsals. Being aware of nonverbal output will help music teachers to be more consistent and effective communicators and to create environments that are conducive to positive learning experiences and exciting classrooms.
