Frame Your Images: Making Digital Images Accessible for Study & Testing
Gepner, Ivan
American Biology Teacher, v71 n1 p42-48 Jan 2009
Images, whether at the level of molecules, cells, organs, organisms, or environments, are at the core of many biological disciplines. Even with the contemporary emphasis on molecular analysis, biology has retained its traditional strong visual component. In courses that rely on the study of biological structure, the presentation of images for study or testing has frequently tested the patience of the instructor. To be useful, images must be obtained, organized, and made easily accessible to the students. Testing of student learning has presented an additional series of challenges. Traditional test scenarios have required students to move in lockstep through the test material, devote equal amounts of time to each image, and typically do not allow return visits to images already viewed. This article presents a solution to these problems that utilizes the Internet and a Web browser to distribute and display images. The technique allows students to access images from a collection in a non-linear order, proceed through the collection at their own pace, and thereby facilitate the study and testing of visual information.
