This is a book about air and water pollution whose chapters cover the topics of air pollution--general considerations, carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, hydrocarbons and photochemical oxidants, sulfur oxides, particulates, temperature inversions and the greenhouse effect; and water pollution--general considerations, mercury, lead, detergents, synthetic organic insecticides, oil, and waste water treatment. The main focus is on the chemistry and chemical compounds involved, with some overlap into other scientific disciplines. Supplementary readings are listed at the end of each chapter and are drawn from two main sources, scientific journals and U.S. Government documents.
