This year people celebrate the 50th anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court decision, "Brown v. the Board of Education." A half-century after the Supreme Court found that segregated schools are "inherently unequal," there is much research to support the Court's decision. However, 2004 finds the U.S. educational system becoming more segregated for Latinos and African Americans across all regions. "The Complexity of Black Progress," a report released in March by the National Urban League, found that black students' academic performance still trailed that of their white counterparts. The Civil Rights Project at Harvard University released a report, ""Brown" At 50: King's Dream or Plessy's Nightmare?" which showed that even in school districts where court-ordered desegregation was ended in the past decade, "there has been a major increase in segregation. The courts assumed that the forces that produced segregation and inequality had been cured. This report shows they have not been." What people learn in a look back at "Brown" is that while the Supreme Court changed the face of the educational system, not all the problems that existed in 1954 have been cured and there is still much work left to do to ensure that America doesn't lose the progress begun with "Brown."
