A Year of Hands-on Science: Exciting Theme Units with More Than 100 Activities, Projects, and Experiments To Make Science Come Alive.
Kepler, Lynne; Novelli, Joan, Ed.
This book contains 18 themed teaching units with 2 themes per chapter, organized seasonally around the traditional school year. Each theme includes natural connections and hands-on science activities that correspond to what children are already observing in their world. Each chapter begins with highlights of the month and a reproducible "Science at Home" newsletter designed to introduce the themes and activities for the month, enhance communication between school and home, promote parents' involvement, and serve as a planning tool for the teacher. Each theme contains an introduction that connects it to children's everyday lives, and the following sections: science concepts and skills, science dictionary, science on display, science activities, book breaks, curriculum connections, science journal pages, and resources for children and teachers. The concepts included are grouped under four broad areas: physical science, life science, earth/space science, and science/technology. Teaching units include: Discover Butterflies, Moon Watch, Falling Leaves, Degrees of Weather, Harvest Time, Bears in Winter, Ice and Snow, For the Birds, The Night Sky, Push and Pull, In the Shadows, Healthy Hearts, Windy Weather, Flying Things, Rain Comes and Goes, Seeds and Soil, Animals at Home, and Sun Power.
