Using Newsletters to Improve Parents' Communication with Their Early Adolescents
Dworkin, Jodi; Gonzalez, Chris; Gengler, Colleen; Olson, Kathleen
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v103 n1 p47-54 2011
Two sets of newsletters designed to improve parent-teen communication were distributed at two different time points to 71 parents of seventh and eighth graders across five states. At both points, parents completed an evaluation assessing parent-child communication, parenting practices, the emotional experience of parenting, other parent education experiences, and newsletter readership. After reading the newsletters, parents reported gaining information and skills to better communicate with their teen and feeling supported in their parenting role, which led to their feeling less worried and less frustrated as parents. These data provide evidence that newsletters can be an effective method of education for parents of teens who are typically hard to reach. (Contains 2 tables.)
