This book contains the personal stories of women in 78 different occupations and the following six essays on working women: "Why Take Our Daughters to Work" (Nell Merlino); "Girls Empowering Girls: 'New Moon' Magazine" (Mavis Gruver); "Having It All: Managing Jobs and Children" (Nancy L. Marshall); "What Is Good for Nontraditional Employees Is Good for Business" (Sumru Erkut); "Sexual Harassment: What It Is, What to Do About It" (Colleen Phelan); and "Nontraditional Jobs for Women" (Kristin Watkins). Most of the women whose personal stories are presented were chosen randomly with no criteria for a certain political leaning or level of consciousness regarding women's issues. Each woman was asked to write, as honestly as she could, about herself and her work and the issues that concern her. A wide variety of occupations considered traditional and nontraditional are represented, including the following: mathematics instructor, smoke jumper, veterinarian, investigator, television writer, coal miner, principal, lawyer, medical records clerk, musician, soil scientist, rodeo bronco rider, dry cleaners worker, iron worker, bank president, preschool teacher, judge, pastor, welder, social activist, midwife, waitress, zoo keeper, psychiatric chaplain, deputy sheriff, stationary engineer, sports photographer, mathematician, tribal fisherwoman, police officer, hospital aide, command sergeant major, and poet.
