Emerging Media in Engineering Technology: A Case Study in Higher Education
Ostler, Karl B.
ProQuest LLC, D.C.S. Dissertation, Colorado Technical University
Technical illustration, 3D modeling, and design drafting under the discipline of engineering technology face rapid change and advancements in technologies such that educational leaders must continually anticipate change and make intelligent choices in providing a quality educational experience to adult students. However, how successful program changes are in providing students with the best education possible, and how well the graduates are being accepted and/or leveraged in industry may still remain to be realized in the areas of 3D technologies and use of emerging media. In a single embedded design case study a pilot program was investigated for discovery of new meaning about the phenomenon of successfully providing a bachelor's degree in the field of drafting and design within the discipline of engineering technology. A particular purpose of this project was to provide an analysis on the technology tools necessary and the emerging media used in presenting complex engineering design topics for university level programs teaching engineering technology. This included discussion on various qualitative and quantitative research methods used for both program evaluation and course analysis. Questionnaires and formal interview procedures were presented as primary research instruments used for surveying faculty educators, current students, and program graduates. Various methods of implementation, data processing, and analysis of each of the research instruments were included along with systematic analysis of survey results leading towards effective methods for defining continuous quality improvement objectives as well as determining best practice recommendations for leading engineering technology programs into 2020 and beyond.
