The Resilient Leader
Allison, Elle
Educational Leadership, v69 n4 p79-82 Dec 2011-Jan 2012
School leaders currently face so many challenges--some as basic as a lack of money to hire enough teachers--that they know they need to increase their resilience. According to Allison, who coaches school leaders, strong leaders know how important maintaining resilience is. They recognize when their reserves of hope--and those of their schools--need to be shored up. Five conditions warn that a school's resilience is at risk: (1) top leaders stop learning; (2) people blame everything on the budget; (3) leaders ignore critical indicators; (4) too many initiatives drain people; and (5) success goes uncelebrated. To combat these risks, leaders who stay resilient: (1) engage in personal renewal; (2) make sure their words convey respect and inspiration; (3) stay optimistic; (4) blunt the impact of set-backs; (5) cultivate networks before a crisis; (6) see patterns revealed by data and use them to instigate change.
