Impact of Professional Nursing Tutors on National Council Licensure Examination Success
Mondeik, Shelly L.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Edgewood College
This mixed-methods study examined the impact of professional nursing tutors on National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) success. Thirty-eight nursing student success rates from Northcentral Technical College, a two year technical college in Wisconsin, were analyzed by using NCLEX pass rate information, professional tutoring logs, and a graduate survey. In an effort of program assessment for continuous improvement, the nursing program in this study hired professional nursing tutors as an intervention to work with nursing students to achieve an outcome of higher NCLEX pass rates. The Assessment Cycle by Maki framed the study that addressed two primary research questions: Did the students who met with the professional nursing tutor have a higher NCLEX pass rate than students who did not meet with the professional nursing tutor? What are the perceptions of students related to the effectiveness of the professional nursing tutor on their NCLEX success? The findings of the study showed a high usage of professional tutoring by the students along with all students responding to the graduate survey perceiving professional tutoring as highly or mildly effective in preparing them for the NCLEX. This research informs nursing staff and college administrators of the benefits associated with embracing professional tutoring not only in the nursing program, but as a possibility in other programs that are trying to improve student outcomes.
