The Arctic--A Global Hot Spot: Resources for Teaching the Geography of the Contemporary Canadian Arctic
Arntzen, Betsy; Sotherden, Amy
Geography Teacher, v8 n2 p75-81 2011
Canadian geography is a fascinating topic, particularly the Canadian North. The North is central to Canadian identity as can be seen by the choice of the far north "inukshuk" standing stones as the emblem for the 2010 Winter Olympics held in Vancouver, southern British Columbia. Canada's Arctic is receiving increasing attention by media, researchers, academics, and government officials. Here are four reasons why the Arctic is now a hot spot: (1) Climate change; (2) Potential for natural resource exploitation; (3) Canadian sovereignty; and (4) Increased Inuit activism. Much is published about the Arctic and its inhabitants by those not from the Arctic. But where can students learn about how the inhabitants themselves view their climate, their lifestyle, their culture, their homeland, and the issues of the day? This article presents selected resources which convey an accurate Inuit-centered perspective of the contemporary issues of the Canadian Arctic. (Contains 8 figures.)
