Kotsonis, Helen Hoch; Baker, Bill
This sourcebook, developed for teachers of ecology, biology, general science and hygiene, contains 27 lesson plans that have been organized into 5 units. The units are: The Dynamics of Pollution, Conservation and the Environment, Biological Controls and their Relationship to the Environment, Urban Ecology, and Environment and Health. The lesson plan titles include such phenomena as: water, air, thermal, noise and pesticide pollution; land, plant, animal and water conservation; the biological effects of pesticides and radiation; rodents and insects, waste disposal, organic gardening, malnutrition, sex education and overpopulation; and the effects of alcohol, smoking and narcotics on humans. Each lesson plan includes demonstrations, experiments, laboratory preparations and procedures, time requirements, concepts, learning activities, suggested teaching highlights, quiz questions, audio-visual materials, suggested bibliographies and long-term projects. Concepts are developed from broad problem areas to those affecting the individual specifically. Emphasis is also placed on the use of field study, community resources, and specialist lecturers when available. Suggestions for direct student involvement are included. (BT)
