Do Some School-Age Children Have No Language? Some Problems of Construct Validity in the Pre-LAS Espanol.
MacSwan, Jeff; Rolstad, Kellie; Glass, Gene V.
Bilingual Research Journal, v26 n2 p395-420 Sum 2002
Analysis of a dataset of 38,887 Spanish-speaking children aged 4-6 who took the Pre-Language Assessment Scales Espanol indicates serious concerns with test validity. The "non-non" label--nonverbal in both Spanish and English--may be an artifact of poor assessment. Policies requiring routine oral native-language assessment of language-minority students should be reconsidered. (Contains 67 references.) (SV)
