Learn about and Visit Historic College and University Campuses Using the National Park Service "Discover Our Shared Heritage Travel Itinerary Series"
Shull, Carol D.
Planning for Higher Education, v39 n3 p209-217 Apr-Jun 2011
The National Park Service actively educates the public about registered historic places on college and university campuses and encourages people to visit them through its "Discover Our Shared Heritage Travel Itinerary Series." By featuring the historic buildings and grounds of colleges and universities in the itineraries, the National Park Service helps the public to learn about these institutions and why they are important and compelling destinations. Listing in the National Register of Historic Places raises the visibility and stature of academic institutions and can assist them in obtaining funding to preserve their historic campuses. By preserving and promoting their historic properties, colleges and universities maintain their unique identity and character and that of the communities in which they are located. Institutions of higher learning with distinctive historic campuses stand out because they have significant tangible evidence of their history and contribution that enhances their prestige and makes them more appealing to students, faculty, donors, and visitors alike.
