New Directions for Student Services, n127 p45-52 Fall 2009
Northern Arizona University (NAU) is a public university nestled below the San Francisco Peaks in Flagstaff, Arizona. It enrolls more than 21,000 undergraduate and graduate students at its main campus in Flagstaff, through its 35 statewide sites, and via online program offerings. Within the university organizational system, Student Affairs has a prominent position. Recently, Enrollment Management and Student Affairs (EMSA) departments combined to create one division. The division has the role of serving the diverse students of the university. Located in the Southwest, NAU attracts a unique population of Native American and Hispanic students. Within EMSA, Native American Student Services (NASS) is committed to providing culturally sensitive support services to NAU's Native American and Alaskan Native students as part of the university's mission. The emphasis is on serving first-year freshmen and transfer students and offering assistance with the transition from home to the university community. The students represent or have represented more than 50 tribes throughout the United States. This chapter provides a glimpse of student affairs assessment at Northern Arizona University including a specific example of assessment, tips to implementing assessment at an institution, and barriers encountered when implementing the process at Northern Arizona University.
