Degrees and Diplomas Conferred upon Indians by South African Universities, 1970-1980. Report O-291.
Retief, Z. H. M.; And Others
Statistical data on trends and degrees and diplomas obtained by Indians at South African universities during the period beginning July 1, 1970 and ending June 30, 1981 are presented by means of tables, graphs, and charts prefaced by a brief narrative summary. The following degrees/diplomas are covered: first bachelor's, honors bachelor's and postgraduate or second bachelor's degrees, master's degrees, doctor's degrees, undergraduate diplomas, and postgraduate diplomas. A number of faculties are distinguished, along with specialization fields within each faculty. Attention was paid to sexual composition and growth rate during the period for degree/diploma, faculty, and field of study. During the 1970-1980 period, arts and education were the most popular fields for the first bachelor's and honor's degrees, whereas for master's degrees, the emphasis shifted to the commercial and management sciences. The data seemed to show a proportional decline in the number of female graduates as the level of study rose. Compared with data of the previous decade, however, the percentage of women obtaining different degrees rose. (SW)
