Although every research method has its challenges, there are some specific challenges to the reporting and publishing of narrative inquiry that seem to differ from those encountered in other methods. Some of these arise out of the epistemology of narrative, with its focus on individual experience and interpretive storying, and some arise from the challenges of publication in an academic environment that has parameters largely drawn from very different research paradigms. In this article, the author explores the ways in which these challenges may impact the later stages of narrative research, including the difficulties and ethical challenges of reaching a definitive version of events, and the issues related to publication. Not having access to the unpublished experiences of other narrative inquirers, the author makes her claims based solely on her own 20-year history of narrative research.
