Tenure Snapshot. New Pathways: Faculty Career and Employment for the 21st Century Working Paper Series, Inquiry #2.
Trower, Cathy A.
This report, one in a series about the priorities of the professoriate, presents a narrative summary of information received from 280 higher education institutions that responded to an American Association for Higher Education survey on tenure policies, practices, and trends. Provosts were asked to indicate whether their campuses had considered or implemented modifications to traditional tenure practices, including changing duration of probationary periods, waiving "up or out" provisions, imposing or lifting tenure quotas, using long-term nontenure track appointments, tying tenure to specified base salary, offering inducements to forego or relinquish tenure, redefining criteria for terminating tenured faculty due to financial exigency, redefining the locus of tenure, and instituting post-tenure reviews. Highlights of the survey responses include the following: 31 percent of the institutions reported no changes in traditional tenure policies; 29 percent reported post-tenure review processes; 24 percent reported long-term nontenure-track appointments; 16 percent reported stop-the-tenure-clock provisions; 15 percent reported no tenure system, but instead used contract systems; small percentages of institutions indicated changes to probationary periods, tenure quotas, modified or early-retirement packages, performance-based removal of tenured faculty, inducements for faculty to forego tenure, or changed tenure criteria. A copy of the letter requesting the survey information is appended. (CH)
