A Plan to Establish Consistency in Classroom Management Procedures with Preschool Children.
Napoli, Richard A.
In this practicum, a plan to establish consistency in classroom management was implemented in order to enhance the positive behaviors of preschool and kindergarten children. Participating in the project were 7 classrooms serving 149 preschool and kindergarten children. A total of 14 staff members received inservice training in operant conditioning techniques used to improve student behaviors such as taking turns, helping others, and following directions. Teachers and aides were taught to: (1) define and state operationally each behavior to be changed; (2) obtain a baseline or operant level of the behavior; (3) arrange the learning or treatment situation so that the desirable behavior would occur; (4) identify potential reinforcers; (5) shape and reinforce the desired behavior; and (6) maintain records of the reinforced behavior to determine whether response strength or frequency had increased. Evaluation data indicated that the entire staff followed the established process consistently. Most of the children's parents implemented a follow-up behavior management plan at home. Students exhibited substantially improved self-discipline. Students who had problems meeting competency standards on any of the behavioral items achieved success when parents implemented reinforcement methods at home. (RH)
