This article by José Antonio Bowen was presented at the 2014 annual meeting of the "Association of American Colleges and Universities" where the discussion included the question of how technology was bringing new tools and new competition to higher education, but was also changing basic rules about how "we operate" as human beings. While the use of technology in higher education will surely increase, educators must remain focused on student learning. There needs to be more time for the pedagogy of critical thinking, says Bowen, and engagement and learning must start with what matters to students. Technology, such as social media, can be used as teaching tools, allowing students to connect ideas and enable the educator to show their passion; but, by interacting with students, the educator serves as a role model. Bowden concludes that time for reflection and interaction is a casualty of the digital age, but educators could help reclaim this time with minor alterations to their instructions.
