Research Report: The Holt Basic Reading System (HBRS) Field Study (1976-1977). Study Phase: Student Interest Survey.
Kelly, Eileen
Questionnaires were distributed to 6,354 elementary school students participating in the Holt Basic Reading System Field Study. Primary students reported that their favorite activity is watching television; intermediate students, playing sports. Approximately 25% of the students did not have a pet; 46% reported having a dog; 15%, a cat. Almost 48% of the intermediate students reported that they did not belong to a club or organization. The Scouts was the most frequently named organization by those students who did belong to a club. Across grade levels, male students generally selected the careers of sports player and police detective; female students generally chose teaching and nursing. Primary students, as a whole, reported a strong interest in books about animals and fairy tales. Intermediate students reported a strong interest in books about mysteries, animals, and puzzles and jokes. In addition, intermediate students preferred fiction to non-fiction. Students, across grade level and sex, reported that their favorite subject is art expression; least, social studies. Primary students reported that they like to learn with books and movies; intermediate students, with movies, records, and tapes. (Author/CTM)
