The Effect of Personality Preferences on the 2005 Version of the SAT
Burrs, Ashley
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Walden University
Some researchers suggest the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) is biased toward certain personality types. Extant literature lacked examination of personality constructs and their relationship with SAT scores of the newly revised SAT. The purpose of this study was two-fold. First, this study examined the relationship between the Sensing and Intuition personality types and SAT-Total (SAT-T) scores, while controlling for gender and ethnicity. Second, this study examined if there was a statistical difference between correlation coefficients resultant from bivariate correlations of Sensing and SAT scores and Intuition and SAT scores. Seventy-three participants, 18 years and older, who took the SAT after 2005 were administered Form M of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator assessment. The participants also self-reported their ethnicity, gender, and SAT-T score. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis and partial correlation analyses were conducted. Sensing and Intuition personality types did not predict SAT scores, while holding ethnicity and gender constant. In addition, there was no significant correlation between the bivariate correlations of Sensing and SAT scores and Intuition and SAT scores. The implications for positive social change include greater reassurance among education officials and students in the SATs' ability to accurately assess scholastic aptitude without discriminating on personality, ethnicity, or gender.
