The Exquisite Recorder
Reynolds, Geoffrey A.; Gottschalk, Thomas
General Music Today, v23 n1 p31-34 2009
This article provides general music teachers with resources they can use in their class to: (1) introduce the instrument to their students; (2) energize and reshape their students' attitudes toward the instrument; (3) show older students who are very musical recorder and low flute players who share their love of the instruments through podcasts with atypical styles and accompaniments; and (4) present the recorder as a beautiful instrument worthy of respect and understanding. Like any instrument, orchestral or folk, only the skilled musician can make it a true "instrument." This article is structured as follows: (1) young exquisite performers (middle school through college aged, these are not typical early music pieces but rather are accompanied by jazzy guitar and sofa accompaniments); (2) popular melodies from some of the recent top movie themes appealing to elementary and middle school students; (3) World of Recorders; and (4) a brief introduction to the apex of modern master recorder players titled Famous Recorder Players. The authors provide some YouTube.com videos featuring the "young exquisite performer."
