Leo Kestenberg 1882-1962: Honorary President of ISME 1953-1962 Outstanding Musician, Visionary Educator, Pragmatic Reformer and Utopian Realist
Gruhn, Wilfried
International Journal of Music Education, v22 n2 p103-129 2004
Kestenberg's life history reflects the dramatic political situation of Europe in the 20th century, when the shifting geographical borders changed the nationality of whole populations several times. In these circumstances, cultural identity became more significant than national allegiance. This article is an introduction to Kestenberg's life history; it reflects the many facets of his personality and highlights his achievements in music education. Kestenberg started his musical career as a concert pianist; he then became involved with the social democratic movement, worked for radical changes in music education in Prussia and initiated the most important reforms of school music education in Germany. Very early on, he introduced internationalism into music education, organized international conferences and, to some extent, anticipated the concept of globalization. As an enthusiastic music educator, he was the visionary creator and practical administrator of the first international organization for music education--ISME. He was therefore ISME's first Honorary President. (Contains 1 figure and 30 notes.)
