Circle of Courage Infusion into the Alberta Indigenous Games 2011
Marchand, Dawn Marie
Reclaiming Children and Youth, v20 n3 p59-61 2011
Thousands of indigenous people from across North America came to the Enoch Cree Nation for the Alberta Indigenous Games, six days of sport, education, and cultural awakening. The vision of the Alberta Indigenous Games is to recognize the value and potential of Indigenous culture and the young people. Activities include sports, indigenous arts, speaking, music, dance, and other cultural gatherings. Belonging, Mastery, Independence, and Generosity are the four directions of the Circle of Courage. Each promotes values that develop the individual, family, and community. Circle of Courage values were infused in all events, blending the wisdom of indigenous cultures with modern research on positive youth development. As articulated by Lakota psychologist Martin Brokenleg, the Circle of Courage identifies indigenous traditions that foster social harmony and extraordinary personal achievement. This philosophy promotes an environment of encouragement, empowerment, and acceptance for all people.
