Visions of Music
Root, Susan M.
SchoolArts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v108 n2 p66 Oct 2008
As the author was discussing the future of CD design with her high-school students concerning its possibility of becoming obsolete as the ability to purchase music via the Internet becomes more mainstream, she was reminded of the things that she loves about an album by looking at the pictures, reading the lyrics, touching it and holding it. The music was one experience; the visual design was another. This article presents a CD design lesson which aims to provide students with a vehicle to translate the feeling, emotion, and meaning of music and musicians to a visual representation by creating a complete CD package. As a project for high-school students taking a full year class in computer graphics, this lesson was developed as a way to bring students' knowledge of both Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator together to produce marketable, digitally formatted, professionally designed CD packaging.
