Building Blocks for the New Principal
Beckerman, Leon
Principal Leadership, v5 n5 p43-46 Jan 2005
After all of the theories, strategies, discussions, and classes are completed, new principals often still feel isolated and think they have to reinvent the wheel to learn the basic lessons of leadership--how to improve school climate, how to provide leadership for change, how to communicate effectively, and how to manage time. However, they do not have to do it alone. Identifying problem areas and suggesting how to deal with them will help new principals acquire leadership skills and deploy them in real life (Howard & Sheffler, 1996). In this article, the author discusses five building blocks for developing a leadership style that will help new principals improve the performance of their schools and manage a complex position. These are: (1) school climate; (2) communication; (3) facilitating change; (4) Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy; and (5) managing time.
