Should We Care that Johnny Can't Catch and Susie Can't Skip? What Should We Do about It?
Whitall, Jill; Clark, Jane E.
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v24 n6 p33-35 Jul-Aug 2011
Physical and sport educators care that Johnny and Susie cannot move as well as their peers. They try their best to improve their skill levels because they value participation and skillfulness in sport and physical activity. However, many times there is a deeper problem as to why Johnny or Susie cannot move as well as their peers. Physical and sport educators recognize that some students are below average in their motor skills, but this article focuses on those who may have movement problems qualifying as Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). For children with DCD, their movement difficulties lead them to avoid situations where their lack of motor skill is on display. Indeed, children with DCD have a host of problems beyond their motor issues. Physical and sport educators should know about DCD and its significant consequences. They should then help these children by identifying and assisting the child and then teaching the parents how to deal with the disorder and how to help make it better. These actions will help their movement skills, physical activity, and hopefully avoid the negative psycho-social effects of this disorder. (Contains 1 table.)
