Extrinsic Motivation as Correlates of Work Attitude of the Nigerian Police Force: Implications for Counselling

The study examined Extrinsic motivation as correlates of work attitude of the Nigeria Police Force and its implications for counselling. 300 Police personnel were selected by random sampling technique from six departments that make up police force Headquarters, Abuja. The personnel were selected from each department using simple sampling procedure. The Police Extrinsic motivation work Attitude scale (PEMWAS) was designed by the researcher and used for the study. Four experts in the area from university of Benin and Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma validated the instrument. The instrument sought for information and opinion from police personnel. Analysis of data for the research indicated that wages/salary income and promotion can significantly correlates the work Attitude of the police personnel. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended among other considerations that police personnel should be paid a minimum of thirty thousand naira monthly, to be promoted every three years in a position, guidance and counselling services be established in every state police command and police colleges. Others are Awarding Scholarship to police personnel to study in the tertiary institutions and the minimum entry requirement for enlistment into the police force should be National Diploma (ND) or Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE); or its equivalent.
