The Situational Leadership Approach Effects on Employee Motivation in Multi-Generational Information Technology Organizations
Irby, Thaddaeus
ProQuest LLC, D.Mgt. Dissertation, University of Maryland University College
This study examines the three generations comprising today's IT organizations to determine whether the Situational Leadership approach is effective in motivating this diverse work force to perform project-related tasks. Baby Boomer employees, Generation X employees, and Generation Y employees are the three generations actively employed in IT organizations today. Each generation has different motivations driving them to perform. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs (1943), Herzberg's Motivational-Hygiene Theory (1959), Adam's Equity Theory (1965), Skinner's Reinforcement Theory (1970), and Vroom's Expectancy Theory (1964) are well known motivational theories that are used to explain the motivational effect the Situational Leadership approach has on generational employees within IT organizations. A systematic literature review found that the Situational Leadership approach does not have a clear interdependent relationship to any of these well-known motivational theories, as it only approaches employee motivation from a manager's perception of an employee's work ethic. This finding reveals the lack of management impact the Situational Leadership approach has in this diverse IT workforce where three generations currently comprise team membership. Results of this research will enable IT organizations and its management to better understand preferred leadership approaches, encourage IT organizations to consider alternatives to sole reliance on Situational Leadership training in their organizations; and give future researchers groundbreaking information on Situational Leadership, employee motivation, Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Generation Y.
