Who's Asking?
Kohn, Alfie
Educational Leadership, v73 n1 p16-22 Sep 2015
In this article, Alfie Kohn discusses four questions about questioning--starting with questions that are more basic, and progressing to some that are "deeper and potentially more subversive of traditional schooling." He begins by considering what questions we should ask students, and encourages teachers to keep questions with straightforward, factual answers to a minimum to make more time for open-ended questions that lead to deeper learning. Second, Kohn considers who should be asking the questions, and concludes that when we allow students to develop their own questions, we unleash the power of intrinsic motivation. Third, he asserts that these student questions--rather than common standards imposed from above--should drive the curriculum. Finally, Kohn questions the purpose of asking questions in the first place; he concludes that an essential part of schooling is to develop students' lifelong disposition to question what they have been told, and thus support their development "as participants in a democracy and as human beings." Teachers should cultivate skepticism in their students, invite them to question everything, and share with them what the teachers themselves ask, and why.
