Awareness of the important roles dispositions play in the teaching process and in young children's education is growing. With the inclusion of disposition in the revised National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) standards, education for preservice teachers must increase its focus on the nature of dispositions. This article addresses the central role of dispositions in teacher education. Since effective teachers possess dispositions that foster children's growth and learning, it is clear that teacher education programs have an ethical responsibility to prepare candidates who appear to possess dispositions necessary to support children's learning. It is important for teacher education programs to evaluate teacher candidates' disposition to teach in order to help them decide whether they will make effective teachers. Teacher educators must be more effective in producing educators who have the disposition necessary to positively impact children during their teaching career. If they are not effective, then changes must be made in the preparation of teachers.
