Dealing with Life's Dilemmas: Exploring Values through English and Drama.
Milgrim, Sally-Anne
The nine original one-act plays in this collection are meant to be performed in the classroom or at any social gathering where an informal reading or enactment by a group can take place. The plays touch on a number of conflicts that people may encounter when seeking independence; looking for jobs; trying romance; relating to family members; contending with prejudice, humiliation, or the drug scene; and attempting to make morally sound decisions. Each play in the collection encourages people to use their literacy ability as they become involved in tasks that challenge their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Not only are they asked to volunteer as performers and directors, but when the play is halted at a key moment in the drama, they are invited to write the conclusion out of their own morality and imagination. For the plays in the collection, there is no right or wrong ending, though students might wish to challenge the author when the play is finished or find other ways of making the plays come alive. A glossary of useful drama terms is included. Probing questions and activities designed for the higher levels of comprehension follow each play; these activities were developed as a result of suggestions made by teachers and students across the country.
