Rethinking Leadership: A Collection of Articles. K-College.
Sergiovanni, Thomas J.
This collection of articles looks at leadership strategies that are based on ideas, principles, and values rather than bureaucratic processes. The text is divided into three sections. Section 1 describes a morality-based leadership that emphasizes the bringing together of diverse people into a common cause. The section focuses on administering as a moral craft, new sources of leadership authority, and leadership as stewardship. It shows how successful schools are schools of character, and examines how democratic traditions relate to moral leadership. The second section prescribes a developmental view of leadership and outlines four stages of leadership: leadership by bartering, leadership by building, leadership by bonding, and leadership by binding. The chapters in this section examine ways to add value to leadership, why transformational leadership works and how to provide it, the roots of school leadership, and why educators should seek substitutes for leadership. The last section discusses ways to lead the learning community and includes information on changing the theory of schooling, relationships in communities, and practical suggestions. The book states that though school leaders must be many things to many people and must pay attention to management and politics, at the heart of their work they are ministers. (Contains an index.)
