Teacher Leadership: Improving Teaching and Learning from Inside the Classroom
Wilmore, Elaine L.
Corwin Press
Leadership development has traditionally focused on administrators' responsibility for promoting and enhancing school improvement efforts. Today, there are a growing number of educators who believe leadership in the classroom plays an equally significant role in building a strong school culture. In Teacher Leadership, Elaine L. Wilmore offers a global perspective on classroom teachers' participation as leaders of students and focuses on increasing classroom leadership capacity. The author speaks directly to teachers, providing them with the leadership skills necessary to maximize their capabilities while remaining inside the classroom. Based on Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) standards, the text: (1) Integrates leadership and school reform research with strategies for improvement from inside classrooms; (2) Gives teachers the tools to improve teaching, student learning, and job satisfaction; and (3) Shows how teachers can create change, grow as professionals, and become true leaders to other teachers, their schools, and their communities. Following a foreword (Rosemary Papalewis), dedication, acknowledgments, author information and preface, this book contains nine chapters: (1) Introduction to Teacher Leadership; (2) A Vision for Teacher Leadership; (3) Core Values and Moral Code: Ethics and Integrity For All Time; (4) Classroom Culture and Climate: It Can Make You or Break You; (5) Curriculum and Instruction For Today's Classroom: Not For the Faint of Heart; (6) Equity for All Learners: Yesterday's Classroom Is Not Coming Back; (7) Effective Communication in Today's Schools and Society: It's Not What You Say, It's How You Say It; (8) Teacher Enhancement: If You're Standing Still, You're Moving Backwards; and (9) Bringing It All Together. References, recommended additional reading, and an index are included.
