With the advent of mobile phones--and smartphones in particular--people are slowly moving away from the notion that mobile phones are just for making calls and texting. This coupled with the fact that the uptake of mobile phones hit the 5 billion mark in 2010 has spurred many libraries to offer services that can be used by their patrons on these smaller screens. With so many accessing the internet from portable devices, librarians can no longer ignore or ban their use in libraries. In fact, they need to take things a few steps further and realize that they must eventually discard the idea of offering their services at a centralized location and instead aim to bring what they can offer to where the user is located. Over the next few years, it is expected that the mobile phone will be the most popular way of accessing the internet, and to avoid being bypassed totally by the Information Now Generation (ING) when they are searching for information, libraries must be able to transfer and deliver their services to these mobile devices 24/7. So if librarians haven't done so already, perhaps now is the time to pull down the signs banning mobile phones in their libraries. (Contains 5 figures and 1 table.)
