Teachers' Perceptions of the Effective Teacher
Watson, S.; Miller, T.; Davis, L.; Carter, P.
Research in the Schools, v17 n2 p11-22 Fall 2010
In this study, researchers qualitatively analyzed middle school teacher participant perceptions of qualities of teacher effectiveness across 3 years (2006-2009) through 66 focus group sessions by comparing the participants' identified qualities to Stronge's (2007) Teacher Skills Assessment Checklist. Surprisingly, a disproportionate number (42.6%) of teacher responses fell into the "Teacher as a Person" category as identified by Stronge (2007). Further analysis of these 344 responses (42.6%) against Stronge's indicators in the "Teacher as a Person" category (a) Caring; (b) Shows Fairness and Respect; (c) Interactions with Students; (d) Enthusiasm; (e) Motivation; (f) Dedication to Teaching; and (g) Reflective Practice revealed that 170 (51%) did not seem to match any of Stronge's seven indicators in his "Teacher as a Person" category. This outcome led to a further analysis and the creation of 20 new categories or indicators the researchers believed to be missing from Stronge's indicator list. (Contains 1 table.)
