Thoughts on Surviving as Native Scholars in the Academy
Hernandez-Avila, Ines
American Indian Quarterly, v27 n1-2 p240-248 Win-Spr 2003
In this article, the author offers some thoughts on life as native scholars in academia, along with some possible strategies for survival and achievement. Recognizing how hard it is every day, how crazy this life is in the twenty-first century after everything the communities, families, and nations have gone through, the author considers it a miracle that native scholars are in the academy, working and being creative. She shares some thoughts and suggestions for those who are in the fields of Native American studies. She focuses her discussion on (1) mentoring; (2) letters of reference being written from the positions in the academy; (3) research; (4) teaching; and (5) service. (Contains 1 note.)
