Weaving Together Student Supports
Benigni, Mark D.; Miller, Bruce A.
Principal Leadership, v10 n5 p52-57 Jan 2010
Public schools must be the catalyst for achieving equity in education. Real equity is not simply achieving equality or about ensuring that everyone gets the same resources and receives the same instruction. Equity is about ensuring that all students get what they need to be successful. Fairness is not providing the same resources, instruction, and course selections to all students. Fairness is providing all students with what they need to achieve. This article illustrates how the professional learning community (PLC) initiative at Cromwell (CT) High School effectively supports student learning. Activities at Cromwell are structured around what students need, rather than what adults prefer. They compare and analyze class sizes and veteran teacher loads to answer the essential question, Who is teaching their struggling learners? If schools are to provide equitable education to all students, school leaders must change past norms and traditional mind-sets and have an action plan for recruiting and retaining quality teachers.
