50 Years of C. Wright Mills and "The Sociological Imagination"
Scanlan, Stephen J.; Grauerholz, Liz
Teaching Sociology, v37 n1 p1-7 Jan 2009
The core ideas and lessons of C. Wright Mills are most likely among the first perspectives to which students are exposed in sociology and are a foundation to the discipline. Although perhaps difficult to recall all of the specific details of the encounter, many of these students are likely to remember the first time that they were introduced to C. Wright Mills's "The Sociological Imagination." This article features a collection of papers commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of C. Wright Mills's "The Sociological Imagination." The authors believe that it is in recalling the initial attraction to and enthusiasm for Mills as students in the first place, and evaluating and fine-tuning their ability to pass on a passion for that perspective to students in their classrooms today, that pushes them to reflect not only on the past but look forward to what the next 50 years, and beyond will bring. The authors hope that on this anniversary Mills's work will inspire further dialogue and that through new pedagogical approaches and discussions it remains a central tenet of teaching and learning sociology.
