Thinking Like Twenty-First Century Learners: An Exploration of Blog Use in a Skills-Based Counselor Education Course
Buono, Lisa L.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, California Lutheran University
Twenty-first century learners and millennial generation students have integrated technology into their personal lives; there is a growing expectation for technology to be integrated into their classroom experiences as well. Incorporating technology, including the use of blogs, into teaching and learning is receiving attention in the literature. Using technology as a teaching tool is linked to the enhancement of reflection which is crucial in the development of counselor trainees. Currently there is little exploration about incorporating technology, including blogs, in counselor education literature. In order to address this gap, the purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of counselor trainees when blogging in a skills-based counselor education course. Participants were selected through criterion sampling. They were interviewed twice during the academic session. Seven themes emerged: feeling supported, developing connections, expressing oneself, discovering differing perspectives, finding commonalities, perceiving safety behind the computer screen, and reflection. Six of the seven themes, combined with feelings of safety and trust, led to a deepened shared reflection in the course blog. The findings suggest a course blog can be a valuable technological tool used to aid counselor trainee development.
